Maria wilhelmine Haake was born near Daykin, Neb., on June 22, 1893, to Friedrich Haake and Anna Klaus Haake, and died Dec 22, 1980, in the Jefferson County Memorial Nursing Home in Fairbury at the age of 87 years and six months.
She was sixth in a family of 13 children.
On July 9, 1983 she was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Daykin by Pastor M. Vosseler and was confirmed on April 21, 1907, by Pastor C. R. Peschel.
Minnie, as she was affectionatly known, was always willing to help in time of need. When she was not quite 17, her young mother died, leaving Minnie with six younger brothers and sisters, the youngest sister being only four and two years of age. She, with the help of her father, reared the young family.
Miss Haake enjoyed doing fine handwork throughout her life and after the family was reared, she enjoyed travelling throughout the United States. She was a lifelong member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and taught a Sunday School class for many years. She was a charter member of the St. John Lutheran Ladies Aid Society formed in 1928, which later became American Lutheran Church Women and was an active member as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of the Willing Workers and the Busy Bee Club.
When she became unable to live alone in November 1976, she went to the Jefferson County Memorial Nursing Home. The loss of her sight and increasing problems of her age led to her death Dec 22.
She was preceded in death by seven sister and two brothers, Maria Haake, Anna Henry, Emma Strothman, Ida Haake, Clara Hohensee, Ella Brown, Lydia Haake, Fred Haake and in infanacy Herman Haake.
Surviving are a sister Pauine, Mrs. Arthur Strothmam, of Daykin; two brothers, Herman of Daykin and John of Albany, Ore, and 29 nieces and nephews.
The funeral was Dec 26, in St. John Lutheran Church in Daykin, with Pastor Arno Schelper officiating. A memorial was established to the church. Pallbearers were Don Haake, Daryl Haake, Laverne Schweer, Ralph Strothman, Roger Hohensee and David Brown. Interment was in the church cementery.
