NORTHAMPTON - Ernest "Van" Emerson, 84, of 202 N. Main St., Florence, died at his home on Sunday, Feb. 11.

Born in Hebron, N.H., on Aug. 31, 1922, he was the son of the late Walter and Annie Mae (Merrill) Emerson. He served in the infantry during World War II and earned a Purple Heart for injuries received during the Battle of the Bulge. He worked for the U.S. Post Office in Florence and then in Florida, where he lived for 30 years. Van's hobbies included restoring antique cars, collecting coins, and watching baseball. A story teller with a great sense of humor, he also enjoyed country music, and in his younger days, square dancing. His wife of 51 years, Mary T. (McGlade) Emerson, passed away in May 2000.

He leaves three daughters; Jane Woods of Ferrum, Va., Patti Emerson of Florence, and Christine Emerson of Eugene, Ore., and five grandchildren. He is also survived by four brothers; Bill Emerson of Northampton, Gordon Emerson of Wales, Mass., Donald Emerson of Florence, and Gerald Emerson of Leeds, and a sister; Mabel "Bea" Wright of Agawam.

Funeral services will be Saturday, Feb. 17, at 10 a.m. at the Pease and Gay Funeral Home, 425 Prospect St., in Northampton. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m.
