EUNICE~It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that the family of Joseph "Joe" D. Bertrand announces his passing on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at the Acadian Medical Center with his loving family by his side. He was 83. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2:00 pm at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Eunice. Rite of Committal will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery with Father Nathan Comeaux Celebrant.

Joseph known as "Joe" to all who knew him served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps for 22 years and retired as a First Sergeant of a Combat Engineering Unit. Joe was deployed several times during the Korean and Veitnam wars and was awarded the Purple Heart on more than one occasion. After retirement he worked as a truck driver and was a member of several local associations including, American Legion, V.F.W., D.A.V. and the F.& A.M. Harmony Masonic Lodge #410 and Habibi Acadian Shriners Club. But most importantly he was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him especially by his wife, Dora Ann Miller Bertrand of Eunice; a son, Davis J. Bertrand of Eunice; two daughters, Lydia Marie B. Henry and husband, Joseph K. "Beany" of Church Point, and Samantha B. Smith and companion, Ken Chauvin of Eunice; a brother, Harold Bertrand of New Orleans; two sisters, Mary Deshotel of Jennings and Ruby Grochske of Houston, TX; six grandchildren, Christopher, Matthew, Ashley, Brandon and Brittany Henry and Austyn Smith and one great grandson, Elliot Michael "Eli" Henry.

He now rests in Heaven with his beloved daughter, Wanda Kay Bertrand; his parents, Joseph and Estelle Carrier Bertrand and a brother, Elwood Bertrand.

At the request of the family, visitation will be held at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Eunice on Monday, March 19th from 2:00 pm until 10:00 pm and again on Tuesday, March 20th from 8:00 am until time of services. Deacon Gary Gaudin will recite a Rosary at 6:00 pm Monday evening.
