The Honorable Harry George Banzhoff, of Mechanicsburg, died March 12, 2012, after a brief illness. He was born on April 8th, 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Harry G. and Ruth M. Banzhoff. Sixty-three years ago, Harry was joined in marriage by Joan F. Banzhoff (Fogelsanger), of Chambersburg, who survives him.

A graduate of the Harrisburg Academy, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University's US Naval Reserve Midshipmen School, and the Dickinson School of Law, he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1952. Harry was a veteran of the United States Navy, having received his commission in 1944. Stationed in Coronado, California, he served aboard the USS Grafton (APA-109), and the USS Pocomoke (AV-9) during World War II.

Banzhoff retired as an Administrative Law Judge with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. He was considered one of the Commonwealth's leading authorities on sales and use tax law and corporation tax law, having served as Chief of the Legal Division, Bureau of Sales & Use Tax, and, Chief of the Legal Division, Bureau of Corporation Tax for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.

Living and leading in the spirit of the Rotary Club's motto of service above self, Harry was a former Chairman of the Board of the South Central Pennsylvania Heart Association, President of the Pennsylvania National Horse Show for six years, member of the board of the Central Pennsylvania Junior Horse show Association, Primary Gift Chairman of the Messiah College Hall of Sciences Building, Judge Advocate for the Navy League of Harrisburg, past President of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association of Harrisburg, and was a member of the Mechanicsburg Men's Club and American Legion Post 26.

An avid cyclist, Banzhoff founded the 110 Club, and was a ride leader for weekly rides out of Mechanicsburg High School. It is estimated that Harry rode over 150,000 miles spanning 60 years of bicycling, goodwill and friendship.

Harry held the rating of Silver Life Master awarded by the American Contract Bridge League. He was a past President of the Mechanicsburg Bridge Club, as well as the Harrisburg Bridge Club. He was a fervent horseman, retired Master of Hounds of the Beaufort Hunt Club, and held membership in the West Shore Country Club and the Country Club of Harrisburg.

Also surviving are Harry's daughters Joan Lindsey of Winter Park, FL, Cherie Tuckey; granddaughter Tierna (husband Adam and great granddaughter Lilyan); sons Harry (wife Pat, granddaughters Meredith and Brittany); Robert (wife Lori, granddaughter Amanda); and Jeff (wife Mary, grandsons Joseph and Jonathan), all from Mechanicsburg, PA. A brother, Dr. Gordon Banzhoff (wife Babe) of Naples Florida, predeceased him in 2011.

Visitation will be held 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Myers-Harner Funeral Home, 1903 Market St, Camp Hill. Memorial Services will be held at the funeral home Friday, March 16, 2012 at 11:00. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
