John D. Amos, 91, of Fairmont, died at his home on Saturday (May 1, 2010).

He was born Nov. 2, 1918, in Fairmont, a son of the late Frank Rezin Amos and Katherine Fern Donham Amos.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence Rebecca Carden Amos, on Dec. 3, 1996. He is survived by his second wife, Betty Ann Lindsey Amos of Fairmont.

Mr. Amos was a retired local attorney and partner of Furbee, Amos, Webb and Critchfield Law Firm, formerly of Fairmont. He was also a former founder and bank director of Community Bank and Trust of Fairmont. He was a Methodist by faith.

He was a veteran during World War II and served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy. He was a 1934 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, 1938 graduate of Colgate University and later received his law degree form West Virginia University.

He served as a board member for many organizations, including Fairmont General Hospital, Salvation Army and the Marion County Rescue Squad. He also held memberships in the Rotary Club of Fairmont and the Fairmont Field Club.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Trough Club near Romney. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He also supported the West Virginia University rifle team. Mr. Amos spent hours in the woods and on the waters on this continent as an amateur naturalist, hunter, bass, trout and surf fisherman, a photographer and a collector of old bottles. An excellent marksman, he was rated as a national rifle association lifetime master with the 22 rifle and was a member of the Owenized Gun Club and its coach. John was called "Fish" by his cronies form high school and college.

Survivors include his second wife, Betty Ann Lindsey Amos of Fairmont; daughters, Jean and her husband Phil Williams of Cary, N.C., and Sally and her husband Ronald Benton of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; sister, Mary Katherine and her husband James McCartney of Morgantown; five grandchildren, Dawn Collier of New Bern, N.C., John Williams of Raleigh, N.C., Ashley Benton Lea of Thousand Oaks, Michael Williams of Raleigh and Kristie Benton Simonds of Thousand Oaks; seven great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Marci Thompson Priest of Fairmont, Andrea Thompson Simmons of Elkins and Jamie Goff Kraegenbrink of Fairmont; and five step-grandchildren, Savanna, Sara, Summer Walker, Dillon Chambers and Erika Poling.
