Lefty Robinson obituary: He left home at 13, with 35 cents and yearning for work
HOEFER ALLEN (LEFTY) ROBINSON died March 16, 2012 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma.
Lefty was born at home, July 5, 1928 near Doniphan, Missouri to Charles E. and Mary Rue Hoefer Robinson. He was the sixth of seven children Lorene Lloyd, Charles E. Jr., Carmen Howell, Dolly Rue Hartness and Joe Max.
He left home at 13, with 35 cents in his pocket. He hitchhiked across states, slept along the side of the road, to get to work he'd heard about.
Lefty was a pipeliner and rancher who especially loved his horses. He was crazy about children and animals and could stand for no food to be wasted, nor for any animal to be hungry or mistreated. He said he had been hungry and knew what it was like. He thought his last dog, Lady, was the smartest and best dog he had ever owned.
He met the love of his life, Barbara Hartness, while in Pawhuska visiting his sister, Dolly Rue, who had married Barbara's brother, Don Hartness. Lefty and Barbara married December 23, 1946 in Sedan, Kansas and left the next day traveling by trail to Minnesota to a pipeline job. They were married for 61 years at the time of Barbara's death.
He and Barbara had two children: Larry Allen Robinson (wife Rene) of South Orange, New Jersey and Cherry Dawn Byfield (husband Don) of Pawhuska. Lefty also leaves precious grandchildren, Zondra Clunn, Zane Robinson, Lisa Robinson, Stephanie Moore, Courtney Henderson, Owen Byfield, step-granddaughter, Brittnae Brassfield, and 8 great grandchildren.
Lefty was proud to be both a charter member of Union Local 3798 and of being a Mason since 1952.
Graveside services will be officiated by Eddie Redeagle, Jr., at 10:30 AM, March 19, 2012 at the Pawhuska Cemetery.
