Carlos is a son of Isaac and Sarah (Stone) Dexter.

He was a Civil War Veteran, serving 1st with Co. G, 6th Michigan Infantry, enlisting on 13 August 1861 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, mustered in on 20 August, 1861. Mustered out 5 Jan, 1863 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Discharged 10 July, 1863 in Allegan, Michigan. Re-enlisted on 29 Jan, 1864 in Allegan, Michigan to Co. I, Michigan Heavy Artillery. Discharged 20 August, 1865, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Carlos died in 1919 at the National Veteran's Home, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
