James E Guinn
Mary Dell Guinn Parker Johnson was born Nov. 23, 1926 in Fort Worth, Texas, the youngest of
four children of Elvis Guinn and Eva Dillingham Guinn. She attended both Catholic and public
schools in Fort Worth, including James E. Guinn School, named after her
paternal grandfather, a school principle and son of former slaves.
She attended Fisk University in Nashville, Tenn. where she majored in
English and minored in Drama. She met David E. Parker, a dental
student at Meharry. Upon graduation, they married in 1947 and moved to
Pine Bluff, his hometown. They had three children, Laura Ann Parker,
David Edward Parker, Jr., and Michael James Parker.
After the untimely death of her husband in 1961, Mary Dell began her
career as a teacher, teaching elementary at St. Peter's Catholic School. Later, she taught 3rd
grade at First Ward elementary school. She loved teaching children and she believed education
was a key to a successful life. She felt the role of a teacher included caring about the individual
and she cared as much about the child as she did about his or her education. She received her
Master of Education from University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She retired in 19992-93, after
32 years in the classroom. She continued tutoring students in reading and math for several years
In 1969 Mary Dell married Kenneth L. Johnson, Jr., a Pine Bluff businessman. That union
produced a son, Kenneth L. Johnson III. They made their home in Pine Bluff and were married
for 41 years. They were active members of St. Peter's Catholic Church and the Pine Bluff
Mary Dell was a Charter Member of The Pine Bluff Chapter of The Links, Inc., member of Delta
Omega Omega graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., member of Pine Bluff
Education Association and was named Elementary Teacher of the Year 1981. She was awarded
National 2nd Place in Primary Level in Teaching Economics from the Joint Council on
Economics Education and the International Paper Company Foundation in 1977.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. David E. Parker, her brother Dr. James E.
Guinn, and sister Evelyn V. Scarlett. She is survived by her loving husband, Kenneth L. Johnson,
Jr., her four children, her three grandchildren; Dr. Theresa Castoro Willis, Anthony David
Castoro, and Christopher Michael Castoro, by nine adoring great grandchildren and by her
beloved brother Dr. Edward W. Guinn.
She was much loved in this world. We who love her gratefully pass her into the compassionate
arms of our savior Jesus Christ.
