Milton S. Howe was born May 4th 1838, the son of Dennis and Lucy (Ball) Howe. His father Dennis was a farmer and woodenware manufacturer in Rindge. The family lived in Rindge until removing to Jaffrey in 1855. Milton enlisted in the 14th NH Volunteer Infantry Regiment on Aug. 14 1862 when he was 24 years old. At the time of his enlistment his occupation was listed as Law student. He was mustered in as Non-Commissioned Staff. Com. Sgt. Milton Howe died of disease on November 24 1862 at Offutt's Crossroads, MD (now Potomac MD) the cause of his death is listed as typhoid fever.
