In grammar school geography class, Bertha's fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Rainwater showed her the mysterious places of the world and it was then that she decided that one day she would travel to see those far- away lands. During the 1970s, after her retirement, Bertha traveled extensively to Holland, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and England. She cruised the Mediterranean Sea from Athens, Greece, traveling The Holy Land of Israel moving through Egypt, Syria and Istanbul, Turkey. She was intrigued that when passing through the Bosporus Straits, she could see Europe on one side and Asia on the other. She visited the Islands of Santorini, Crete and fabled Rhodes. She traveled to Hawaii and then via Alaska traveled to the Far East; touring Japan, Taiwan, Mainland China and Thailand. She traveled in Mexico, Canada and 42 of the 50 States
After graduating from college, she became a teacher. She was a member of the Hyde Park Baptist Church. Bertha enjoyed oil painting and was a never happier than with family or in the company of friends at the forty-two table. Funeral services were held November 29, 2003, in the Colonial Chapel of Cook-Walden Funeral Home and burial followed at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery.
