PETERSHAM, Massachusetts -- Sr. Simonne Bonin, 95, of the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, of North Main Street, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 at the Assumption Residence after a long illness.

Formerly known as Sister Elzear-de-Marie, she professed 72 years of religious vows.

Born in Woonsocket, R.I., Sr. Simonne was the daughter of the late Jean-Baptiste (1888-1958) and Anastasie (Fafard) Bonin (1886-1963). She attended Assumption Academy in Nicolet, P.Q. Canada and pursued studies at River College. After completing her religious training, she was sent to the United States to teach French. She excelled in imparting a great liking for the language to her primary grade students.

Sister Simonne taught at various parish schools in Massachusetts, especially in Spencer, Brockton, Salem, Southbridge and Millbury. Her latest assignment was at Assumption Montessori School in Petersham for some 12 years.

She leaves three brothers, Herman, Robert, Andre Bonin, and one sister, Mrs. Cecile LaCharite from Canada, as well as nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 10 a.m. in the Assumption Residence Chapel.

Burial will be in the East Street Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Assumption Retirement Fund, P.O. Box 128, Petersham, MA 01366-0128.

The J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home 137 Main St., Athol is directing arrangements.
