One of Wisconsin's best-known citizens can now add "Doctor" to her name. Mary Fowler Rennebohm, Eta '20, received an honorary doctor of laws degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison at May commencement ceremonies.
Perhaps Mary is best known for her years as Wisconsin's First Lady--her husband Oscar served as governor from 1947 to 1951. But since his death in 1968, she has taken advantage of her family's business success (the large Rennebohn Pharmacy chain) to donate heavily to social and educational causes.
Although she is a Danville, Ill., native, Mary has devoted her life to the state of Wisconsin since graduating from the University School of Commerce in 1920. While at UW, Mary helped install Eta chapter and was initiated as a charter member.
The Rennebohm Foundation, under Mary's guidance, has given more than $1,500,000 in donations to hospitals, churches, social services and the University of Wisconsin. Three professorships--in public administration, business and medicine--equipment for a new pharmacy school auditorium and numerous grants are among the foundation's gifts to Mary's alma mater.
Mary also has been active in such Madison civic efforts as United Way and Red Cross. She received the University of Wisconsin's Alumni Distinguished Service Award in 1964."
NOTE: Oscar Arthur Rennebohm, s/o William Carl Rennebohm and Julia A. Brandt, and Mary Collison Fowler, d/o David Morton Fowler and Lillie Collison, were married on September 8, 1920 in Vermilion County, Illinois. (Record 8, pg. 143)
