F.E. (Elva) Baker, 89, of Greenville died Friday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville. Services are at 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Street Church of Christ. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.

Funeral services for F.E. "Elva" Baker, long-time Greenville educator, are at 2 p.m. today at the Johnson Street Church of Christ. Baker, 89, died Friday at Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville.

Baker held a number of teaching and administrative positions in the Greenville Independent School District during his career including serving as principal of Houston Elementary, principal of Greenville Junior High School and principal of Austin Elementary School as well as working as an administrator in the central administration office.

Baker was born in Clyde, Texas on Sept. 12, 1909, the son of F.E. Baker and Ruhamah Ezell Baker. He married Opal Marie Branch in Greenville on June 26, 1939. He was a World War II veteran serving in the Army Air Corps.

He graduated from Abilene High School in 1928 and was a member of the 1928 state championship football team.

In 1934, he graduated from Texas Tech University (sic) in Lubbock where he attended on a football scholarship and was team captain and all-conference tackle during his senior year. He was a graduate assistant at Texas Tech in 1934-35.

Baker coached and taught at Denison High School in 1935; coached football and taught history at Greenville High School from 1936 through 1939; worked in Dean of Men's office at Texas Tech from 1939 to 1942; and coached and taught in the Goose Creek ISD in Baytown in 1942.

After World War II, Baker owned and operated Fresher Foods Grocery Store in Greenville and attended East Texas State Teacher's College, now Texas A&M University-Commerce where he earned a masters degree in school administration and physical education inf 1950.

In 1949-50 Baker coached football and taught history, math, and physical education at Greenville High School.

He became principal of Houston Elementary School in 1951 and principal of Greenville Junior High School in 1952, where he remained until 1971.

Baker worked in Central Administration for Greenville ISD from 1971 to 1973 and served as principal of Austin Elementary from 1973 until his retirement from education in 1975.

After his distinguished education career, Baker owned and operated Lost Hour Antique Shop in Uptown Forum.

He joined the Johnson Street Church of Christ in 1942 and taught Bible classes there for 40 years. He also taught Bible credit courses in the Greenville schools.

Baker was a member of the Lion's Club since 1949 and served in various leadership capacities. He received the Lion of the Year Award and Life Membership.

He was also a member of the Knife and Fork Club, where he served as president for six years; was a member of the Retired Teachers Association; and served as chairman of Caddo Boy Scout District.

Baker is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Vicki and Larry D. Butler of Rowlett; a granddaughter, Stephanie Butler of Rowlett; a sister, Willadeen Martin of Sulphur Springs; and a nephew and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Bob Oliver of Richardson and other nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Baker in 1993 and by three sisters, Oma Smith, Lovys Oliver, and Maureen Vaughan.

Randy Daw will officiate and burial will be in East Mount Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are C.W. Spainhour, Herb Freeman, Gilbert Voss, Glen Little, John Paul Willabay, J.D. Henson, Jearl Dunavin, and Leon Powers. Honorary pallbearers are Robert Davis, James Weatherall, Ed Voss, W.T. Goad, Wesley Martin, George Drew, Roy Lambert, Buddy Nix, Reed Wishard, John Sutton, and Billy Russell.
