Funeral services for Ms. Mattie Lois Compton, 89, were Monday, December 27, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Kilgroe Funeral Home. Interment was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, Pell City. Ms. Compton died December 25, 2010. Ms. Compton was preceded in death by her parents Rev. and Mrs. Virgil Compton, and younger sister Sarah Frances Compton. Mattie Lois Compton was the first child of Rev. and Mrs. Virgil Compton. She attended Avondale Mills School for seven years. After graduating from Pell City High School in 1940, she completed correspondence courses at Alverson Draughn Business College in Birmingham. In January 1943, Ms. Compton went to work in the Union State Bank after working on the Ration Board. She worked 53 years and 5 months for the bank before retiring in July 1996. Lois joined the Wesleyan Methodist Church in May 1934. Ms. Compton was presently a member of Bible Methodist Church, being the oldest member. Duties performed for the church were song leader for Sunday School, taught Sunday School, C.M.B. Superintendent Trustee, served on advisory board, Ladies Missionary Society Treasury for over fifty years. She is survived by 2 brothers, R.A. (Betty) Compton, James (Jean) Compton; 2 sisters, Florence O. Compton, Clara Mae Compton; and several nieces and nephews.
