Joseph was born on the old Gould Farm, lot 32 in the 6th concession of Uxbridge, Ontario,Canada. The family changed their name from Gold to Gould because of Joseph. "I asked my father why he wrote his name Gold, which was a metal, when Gould was a man's name. He said that the family had always written it so, as far back as he had any record. 'Well,' I replied, 'I think I shall write my name Go-u-l-d, Gould, as I want a man's name and not the name of a metal" (1) pg.23
Mr. Gould married Mary James (1816-1891), daughter of Ruth Lundy and Ezekial James, a Quaker, on Jan. 1, 1839. "Their marriage was duly solemnized on the first day of January, 1839. They were married by special license by the Revd. Mr. Stewart, Baptist minister, at the house of their mutual friend, Mr. Reid, corner of Queen and Yonge streets, Toronto. (1) pg.111

A prisoner box carved by Joseph Gould for Mary James while he was a prisoner in Toronto Goal, for his ties with the 1837 Rebellion, is in the possession of the Uxbridge Historical Centre.
