Digested--Biography of James Monroe Collier
Born in New York 1830, he appeared in Minnesota records for the 1st time in the year 1860 with wife Sarah Ann. The couple lived in the town of Greenfield, Wabasha County., Minnesota where James worked as a carpenter until the outbreak of the civil war in 1862. At that time he enlisted in the Union Army as Corporal James M. Collier. Company C 10th MN Volunteer Infantry.
On the very day of his enlistment, August 18, 1862, the Sioux Indian War began. As was the case for many of the Minnesota regiments, the men saw action in both wars, Indian and Civil.
The 10th regiment was no exception. In August 1865 the 10th Regiment was steamer shipped back to the city of St. Paul from the south where they were banqueted by the city and discharged back into civilian life. Ft. Snelling records describe our great-grandfather as being 5'8" tall with dark eyes, dark hair and a dark complexion.
James and Sarah made a permanent home for their family in the town of Ellsworth, Meeker County., Minnesota on an 80 acre farm, where they lived until at least the late 1890s. They raised 11 known children there, losing one, Freeman J. in infancy. Freeman J. appears to have been the name sake of an older brother of James who lived near them in Greenfield. Another of their children, James Monroe Jr., born in 1864 became the next direct ancestor in our branch of the family tree.
