Five people were killed when a tornado ripped through East Bernstadt, Kentucky.

The fatalities were:
Ethel Pruitt;
Wilburn Pitman and Virginia "Lizzie" Pitman of Old Hare Road; and Sherman Wayne Allen and Debbie Allen of Little Arthur Ridge Road.


Wilburn Pittman was born on February 8, 1931, in Laurel County, Kentucky, the son of the late Everett and Bertha Lee Bustle Pittman. Virginia Pittman was born on August 29, 1939, in Clay County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Ed and Matilda Lawson Smith. Wilburn and Virginia are survived by five children: Floyd Wilburn Pittman and wife, Christina, Stephen Lee Pittman and wife, Tiffany, Loyd Dale Pittman, and Clinton Dean Pittman and wife Tracy, all of East Bernstadt, and Richard Clay Pittman and wife, Debbie, of Annville, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Wilburn is survived by one sister: Bernice Smith of Felicity, Ohio, and is preceded in death by three siblings: Bonnie, Denver and Edward Pittman.
Virginia is survived by nine siblings: Geneva Smith, Mayola Eversole, and Jerry Smith all of East Bernstadt, Evadean Sturgill, Alvin and Earl Smith all of New Richmond, Ohio, Jackie Lee Gabbard of London, Ethel Smith of Felicity, Ohio and Calvin Smith of Liberty, Indiana, and is preceded in death by four siblings: Felix Smith, Jean Delph, Sondra McGeorge and Bert Smith.
Wilburn was a former truck driver, a veteran of the United States Army and a member of Hazel Patch Baptist Church. Virginia was a homemaker and former factory worker.
Wilburn Pittman departed this life at St. Joseph – London on Friday, March 2, 2012, and Virginia Pittman departed this life at the UK Medical Center in Lexington on Saturday, March 3, 2012.
