City Clerk Dies
"No one will every fill the shoes of Charlie Campbell in the Herrin City Clerk's Office." Those were among the words of tribute paid Saturday to long time City Clerk Charles W Campbell, 69.
Mr Campbell died Friday night of a heart attack. His death ended 39 years of service to the city. Mr Campbell suffered a heart attack in his office at 4:45pm Friday. He was taken to Herrin Hospital where he died at 7:12pm.
Herrin Mayor Fred Henderson--at times on opposite sides of issues from Campbell--Saturday said the city will be able to name a new person to the office, but unable to replace Mr Campbell.
Mr Campbell of 920 N 12th St., had planned formally to announce his retirement soon. He was not planning to seek re-election in April.
It would have been the first time he had not run for the clerks job since 1925. The former coal miner was first elected at the age of 35.
An amazingly successful candidate, he lost only once to Paul Harris in 1933. He then defeated Harris in 1935.
He never missed a day of work in the office until his first heart attack in 1935. He was stricken again in 1936, 1937 and 1963, but bouncing back each time to keep an eye on the records and provide a balancing effect in the city.
Running on the People's Civic Improvement Party and the People's Party, he was often on the other side of the political fence from the Herrin mayor and city council.
He was a stickler for detail and argued for open and equitable and efficient management of city affairs.
Last year he paid $224 out of his own pocket in the city's in the parking meter fund to complete payment on tickets for which the city had not collected the full fine. The move cleared the way for further action against persons who had not paid tickets.
A separate parking committee since has been set up to handle tickets and enforce payment.
Henderson said he will name Mrs Dallas Beers Jr., now deputy clerk to fill the post at least until the next city council meeting July 27.
"Charlie Campbell has always been an honest and upright citizen and his service as clerk cannot be questioned." I am speaking my sentiments and I believe the sentiments of all the people in Herrin when I say we have lost a great man and neighbor, and I say we are all sorry." Henderson said.
The mayor has ask that any business open today close their doors during the funeral hour.

He was born June 26, 1893 in Render, Ky, the son of Robert and Agnes Lauder Campbell. He married the former Edith Blair in Perryville, Mo Oct 4, 1920.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, Herrin.
Burial will be in Herrin City Cemetery. Friends may call until services at the funeral home. Military rites will be at the cemetery.
