Luther Berry was the son of John Berry and Thankful Eaton. He married Sally Peck in March 1818 in Cornwall, Connecticut. They had eight surviving children; Stiles, Lemuel, Eliza, DeWitt, Melinda, Buel, Irena, and Aritta, plus an infant son who died in his first month (1837). In the 1840 Census of Groton, New York, Luther was a farmer.
