Col Marschal Wilson Massey

COLONEL MARSCHAL WILSON (BOB) MASSEY, a decorated WWII and Korean War veteran with a distinguished military career, died on March 2, 2012 at the age of 93. Marschal Wilson Massey was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on October 23rd, 1918, the third child of Fred Bailey Massey and Verna Hester Wilson. Bob was valedictorian of his class at Wichita Falls High School and attended the University of Texas for 2 years before being joining the Army in 1939.
During the war he served in the 362nd Fighter Group under Col. Morton D. Magoffin and later under Col. Joseph L. Laughlin after Col. Magoffin became a POW. The group was first assigned to provide escort missions for bombers of the Eighth Air Force, then was transferred to the XIX Tactical Air Command supporting the campaigns of General George C. Patton's Third Army, earning six battles stars and two Presidential citations.
After the war he received his bachelor's degree with honors from SMU and then pursued a masters at the University of Chicago, where he was called up for Korean War service and managed the Air Force's medical services in Japan, developing local language fluency. After the conflict he also served at Walker AFB (Roswell), Sheppard AFB and Nellis AFB (Las Vegas).
Bob was trained as a classical organist and will be remembered for his love of opera and his beautiful prose letters to his family describing his world travels as he served his country.
He is survived by his brother Ford Massey of Wichita Falls; nieces Sandra Fairfield McBride of Wichita Falls and Linda Strickland of Hattiesburg, Miss; great nieces Cindy Nelson of Houston and Susan Strickland of Memphis Tenn.; and great nephews Stephan Fairfield of Houston and Mark and Scott Strickland of Hattiesburg.
Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 3:00 PM Saturday March 3rd at Riverside Cemetery in Wichita Falls with Rev. Ike Butterworth officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn's Colonial Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society of Wichita County, P. O. Box 3648, Wichita Falls, TX 76301.
