James Gaston, eldest son of John Gaston, II and the former Miss Janet A. Knox, was born of the 2nd day of January 1777 in Richburg, South Carolina. James family on both sides had emigrated from Ireland in search of religious freedom, as well as land grants in colonial America. The Gastons and The Knox were loyal patriots during the Amercian Revolution, serving in the cause of freedom. James lost several cousins and uncles in the conflict.
James was educated in a school start by his maternal grandmother, Esther Waugh Gaston and studied law at Franklin College, later to become the University of Georgia. In 1798, James married Miss Isabella Bigham, daughter of James Bigham, Esq. and the former Jane McFadden of Chester, South Carolina.
Around 1809, James and Isabella emigrated to the area around Logan in Butler County Kentucky with James' sister Elizabeth and her husband, Jonathan Ferguson. Here Isabella gave birth to their only child, a son named James Russell.
James Gaston died in 1809 at the age of 32 years old. He was buried in Ferguson Cemetery across from Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Butler County, Kentucky.
