Virginia Irene Ashcraft, 94, passed away at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, February 26, 2012, at Millers Merry Manor, New Carlisle, Indiana.

She was born on November 1, 1917 in Hudsonville, Illinois to Ira and Hattie (Matthews) Phillips and lived in this area for 70 years, coming from Sullivan, Indiana.

Virginia worked at American Rubber and was an Avon Representative.

On July 3, 1934 in Sullivan County, Indiana, she married Elsworth Ashcraft, who preceded her on August 27, 1982.

She was a member of Salem Chapel United Methodist Church.

She leaves behind three daughters, Sue Doane, Arcadia, Florida, Phyliss (Mike) McMahan, La Porte, and Rita Wangler, Las Vegas, Nevada; two sons, Leon (Gert) Ashcraft, La Porte, and Delbert (Pat) Ashcraft, La Porte; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren, one brother, Wayne Phillips, Carlisle, Indiana; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, Kenneth Doane, one great-grandson, Nate McMahan, six sisters and three brothers.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Essling Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Raschka officiating.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 3 to 8 p.m. and from 10 to 11 a.m. at Essling Funeral Home.

Burial will follow service at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, Indiana.

Essling Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
