U.S. Congressman. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, in 1849, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced practice law in Beaufort, North Carolina. He served as a member of the North Carolina State constitutional convention in 1861 and was the North Carolina Secretary of State, (1864-65), during the Civil War. After the war, he was President of the Atlantic & North Carolina Railroad, in 1867 and a judge on the North Carolina Superior Court, (1868-70). In 1871, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-second and Forty-third Congresses, serving until 1875. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he returned to the practice of law until his death. His son was U.S. Congressman Charles Randolph Thomas Jr.
