Death: Aug. 3, 1904

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A trained physician, he graduated from the Yale University Medical School in 1851. After the outbreak of the Civil War he offered his services to the Union Army, and was appointed as Assistant Surgeon of the 18th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. When the 29th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was recruited, he transferred to that unit to serve as it's Chief Surgeon. He served with the regiment after it became part of the Union Army of the James, and was eventually made an Assistant Quartermaster in charge of all land and water hospital transportation. When the United States Congress authorized the raising of African-American infantry regiments, he left his role as doctor, and was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 24th United States Colored Troops. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on January 6, 1866 for "meritorious services". Before his muster out of the Army he served as Assistant Commissioner of the Freedman's Bureau in Virginia. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
