Hubert L. Billings, 74, 3709 W. Eighth, died Sunday shortly after arrival at Ball Memorial Hospital.
A native of Smithville, Tenn., he moved to Muncie in 1935. In a 1984 interview with The Muncie Evening Press, Mr. Billings said he earned $2 a day working for a gardening firm when he arrived here, "and was glad to get it."
In 1957, he purchased a greenhouse, which he operated as Billings Nursery and Greenhouse ever since. "You have to love plants and people too, to enjoy this business," he once told The Press, comparing raising plants to "raising children by the thousand."
Mr. Billings was a former member of Nurseryman's Association.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby J. Billings, to whom he was married 48 years; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Carol) Kirkman, Muncie; two sons, Don Billings, Noble, Okla., and Dwight Billings, Muncie; a sister, Mary Helen Jennings, and a brother, Ammon Billings, both of Smithville; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Parson Mortuary-Adams Chapel. Calling will be Tuesday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary. The place of burial will be announced later.
