Religious Leader. A native of Landskron, near the Bohemian town of Königgrätz (formerly in the Austria-Hungary Empire), he studied at the Gymnasium of Landskron and at the Sankt Augustine monastery, in Klosterneuburg, in Austria. He joined the Congregation of Canons Regular of Saint Augustine, on October 7, 1883, in Klosterneuburg. He was ordained, on January 8, 1888, in Vienna. From 1888 to 1892, he did pastoral work in the archdiocese of Vienna. He taught moral theology in Klosterneuburg, from 1892 to 1894; and from 1895 to 1901. He served as pastor and prior of the collegiate church of Klosterneuburg, this from 1892 to 1894 and from 1895 to 1913. He was Administrator of his order in Hungary, from 1901 to 1906, year he was named Director of the central chancery of his order. On January 9, 1907, he was elected prepositus of Klosterneuburg. On June 1, 1913, he consecrated archbishop of Vienna. Pope Pius X created him cardinal, on May 25, 1914. He took part in the conclaves of 1914 and 1922. He passed away in his episcopal city. At first, he was buried in the castle of Kranichberg, and transferred in 1953 to the metropolitan cathedral of Sankt Stefan, in Vienna.
