Cordia Laverne Askew, age 92, former resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2012, at her daughter's home in Celina, Texas
Cordia Laverne Shipman was born on October 8, 1919 in Fanshawe, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of William B. Shipman and Josie L. (Prock) Shipman. She was united in marriage to Allie L. Askew on January 24, 1941, in Gowen, Oklahoma.
She received her early education in the Fanshawe area before attending Wilburton Jr. College where she attained her Associate's Degree. She then attended Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
Her college education permitted Cordia to begin teaching. First, she taught in the Rice Creek School near Bartlesville, then as an instructor at the Bartlesville Business College in the subject of speed writing. She soon traded her teaching occupation for one as a bookkeeper, working for various businesses in the Bartlesville area such as: the Bureau of Mines, Barlow Lumber Company, Adams Credit Union, Baughman Lumber Company and IGA Foods.
"Cordy", as she was often called, was a member of Bartlesville Southern Baptist Church where she enjoyed being a Wednesday night cook. She also enjoyed sewing and sporting events, even trying her hand at volleyball at the local YMCA. She was also a member of Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron.
