During the Civil War, Pulliam served in Co. C. of the 30th Rgmt KY Mounted Infantry as a Union private. He enlisted 5 April 1863 at Camp Burnside, KY (Pulaski Co), under Col. Francis N. Alexander. The regiment was initially created to protect Kentucky and Pulliam served much of his time there; but with the call for more men in US service their mission changed and they participated in several campaigns into Virginia. He fought in the Battle of Saltsville 1-3 Oct 1864, and the Second Battle at Saltsville 2 months later in which the Union army succeeded in buring the saltworks. Pulliam mustered out 24 Aug 1865 at Lexington, Fayette Co. KY.
