Theodora "Ted" Banker, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 2001, at St. John's Care Center, Victoria at the age of 98. The daughter of Louis "Lou" and Anna (Culbertson) Banker, she was born Feb. 10, 1905, in the house she was to live in for most of her life in Russell. Ted (a name she was always known by) attended Elementary Schools in Russell, and her class was the first eighth grade class to attend school in the west building of the former Ruppenthal School. She graduated in May, 1923 from Russell High School and that fall enrolled at the University of Kansas, where she pledged Chi Omega sorority. She was on the KU Girl's Rifle Team, and graduated in 1927. In 1928, Ted began to work at "The Store" or L.W. Banker Mercantile. With but a short break between 1930-32, she continued to work at Banker's as an office manager until her retirement in 1994.

Ted became a member of the First Congregational Church in 1918 and a member of the church choir in 1927. She also taught Sunday School, served on the church board and other committees, and was a church moderator. She was a member of the Junior Cosmos Club (now the Prairie Study Club) and helped to establish the Russell Chapter of the American Association of University Women in 1943.

Preceding her in death were: parents, a sister, two brothers, and a nephew. Survivors include nephew and wife; cousin, of Santa Fe, NM; four great-great-nephews; and one great-great-niece.

The funeral services are today, Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2003, at 10:30 a.m, at Pohlman-Heise Memorial Chapel, Russell with Martha Hartman officiating. The interment will be conducted at the Russell City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to First Congregational Church, Russell, or Russell County Historical Society, and may be sent in care of the Pohlman-Heise Mortuary, Russell who is in charge of the arrangements.
