Emily Button Russell was born on April 8, 1906 in Elgin, Nebraska, the 5th daughter of Charles A. and Ida H. Button. She attended rural schools and the town's high school, before going to Wayne State College for two years, where she earned a certificate to teach. She then started her career as a teacher at Kimbal, Nebraska. After a couple of years of teaching at Kimbal, she decided to seek wider pastures, and drove with her eldest sister to New York City to seek her fortune. Among other jobs in New York, Emily had a 15 minute radio show in which she sang popular songs, such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Indian Love Call," and "Foniculi, Fonicula." Her theme song was "Cheeri Cheeri Bin." In New York she met and married Lawrence Russell, Jr. in April 1928. With the birth of their first child, Emily quit her singing and devoted herself full time to home making. In 1933 her husband was called on , as a reserve officer of the US Army, tohelp organize and lead "CCC" (Civilian Conservation Corps) company. The family spent the next few years traveling on CCC assignments in New York, Glacier National Park, western Montana, Placerville, California and Williamsburg, Virginia. In late 1936, at the height of the depression, the CCC assignment was not renewed, and the family moved to stay with her parents in North Bend, Nebraska. They lived in various towns of Nebraska until Lawrence was called up prior to World War II, in 1940, to command a regular army company. Emily moved around with the military assignments till summer 1943, when Lawrence went overseas and she returned to Nebraska for the duration. During the war she attended Midland College in Fremont, Nebraska, graduating in 1945. In early 1946, with the war over, she was among the first dependents to Germany; when a school was established at Mannheim she was at the spot to be hired as one of the first teachers of the Dependent's School System. During the next few years, she moved frequently with military assignments, to Ft. Monroe, Va., Ft. Meade, Md., Ft. Lee, Va. and Okinawa, before arriving at Ft. Gordon in the late 1950's. In Augusta Emily became a grade school teacher, teaching at Sue Reynolds and other schools until the mid 1970's, when she retired. She was a past Grand Worthy Matron of the Elizabeth chapter of Order of Eastern Star, a past president of the Auxiliary of the Augusta Retired Officers Association, an active member of the Augusta Women's Club and St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Emily died on 6, July 2006 at the Kentwood Nursing Home in Augusta, where she had been for over a year. Until recently she lived at her home on Tobacco Road in Augusta. She is survived by her two sons, Lawrence Russell III of Augusta, and Thomas Button Russell of Richmond, Virginia and a foster son, Walter A. Mueller of Bonn, Germany and their wives and 10 grandchildren with their families including 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
