Diedrich Gerdes, 76, passed away suddenly in the home of his son, John Gerdes, west of town, Tuesday evening, March 8. Mr. Gerdes was found in the basement of the home lifeless, by members of the family. this family was called upon just four weeks ago to give one of their number, when Mrs. Gerdes' father Lot Conwell and aged gentleman passed away after a long illness. Both of these gentlemen made their home with the John Gerdes family and will be missed by the household.
Funeral services were held in the New Zion church, Thursday afternoon, March 20, 1932 and were conducted by the Rev. O.A. Dillon. John D. Gerdes accompanied the body to Chicago, where services were held at Park Ridge, Saturday and burial was beside his wife in the Park Ridge cemetery. Diedrich Gerdes, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Frederich Gerdes was born January 13, 1856 in Oldenburg, Germany and departed this life March 8, 1932 at the age of 76 years, l month and 23 days in the home of his son John D. Gerdes and family near Corydon, Iowa.
He came to America with his father and brother in the fall of 1866, ( his mother having died when he was very small.) His father settled on a farm in Des Moines county, near Burlington, Iowa, where he spent the early years of his life. He was married to Johanna H. Hulsebus, September 30, 1875,at Burlington, Iowa, where they made their home until the fall of 1881 when they moved to a farm in Clay township in Wayne county, Iowa., where they lived for thirty-three years when they moved to Allerton and lived two years and then to Chicago where they lived five years. His wife passed away in Chicago and after a year he returned to Wayne county and has since made his home with his son.
He was the father of four sons; John D. of near Corydon, Iowa; Peter B. of Park Ridge, Illinois; Ihno A. and Henry E. of Wesley, Iowa. He leaves to mourn his death his four sons, seventeen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was a devout Christian and a life long member of the Lutheran church.
