Death: May 23, 1969

Composer. Trained as a plumber, he gave up that job to become one of America's most popular songwriters. His music was cheerful, sometimes corny, and often sentimental. McHugh's hit tunes include "Comin' In On a Wing and a Prayer", "I Can't Give You Anything But Love, Baby", "Don't Blame Me", "On the Sunny Side of the Street", "I'm In the Mood for Love", "How Blue the Night", and "Lost in a Fog". He also worked in the movies and received five Academy Award nominations. In all he wrote 279 songs. McHugh was born in Boston. He began contributing songs to Broadway revues in the mid-1920s. From 1927 to 1935 he collaborated with lyricist Dorothy Fields, and later formed a fruitful partnership with Harold Adamson. His stage show "The Streets of Paris" (1939) made stars of the comedy team Abbott and Costello. In the 1950s he worked as a manager of Hollywood talent, including Mamie Van Doren. The long-running Broadway hit "Sugar Babies" (1979), starring Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller, was built around McHugh's greatest hits. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
