J.A. Keister Passes Away At Age Of 76
Succumbs at Home of Cecil Shumaker After 7-weeks' Illness; Services This Monday P.M.
James Allen Keister, a native of Pennsylvania and for many years a prominent Jasper county farmer, died at the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. Cecil Shumaker, at six o'clock Saturday evening. His death followed a seven weeks' illness. The immediate cause of death was tuberculosis of the kidneys.
Mr. Keister was born in Miflin county, Pennsylvania, on July 23, 1856. When he was a lad of ten years he accompanied his parents to Cass county, Indiana where the family settled on a farm near Lake Cicott. At the age of twenty-seven years, shortly after his marriage to Miss Margaret Timmons, he came to Jasper county. Mrs. Keister died on March 5, 1910. On March 21, 1913, he was married to Miss Margaret Brand of Dunkirk, Indiana. He continued to make his home on a farm near Rensselaer until 1916, when he and his family, moved to Warren county, Pa., where they remained until about five years ago, when they returned to Jasper county. Mr. Keister retired from active life last spring and he and Mrs. Keister came to Rensselaer to make their home.
To his first marriage union were born six children, two of whom died in infancy. The four surviving children are Leonard, Miss Lula Keister and Mrs. Willliam Havens of Rensselaer and Everett Keister of Sugar Grove, Pa. He is also survived by a step-daughter, Mrs. Cecil Shumaker; two sisters, Mrs. Charles Todd of Dunkirk, Ind., and Mrs. Charles Growell of Logansport; one brother, George of Spokane, Wash., ten grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
Mr. Keister was one of Jasper county's most substantial and respected citizens and during his many years of residence here he made many friends who are saddened by his death.
The funeral services were held from the W.J. Wright Chapel at two o'clock this Monday afternoon, with the Rev. Charles W. Postilll in charge. Interment was made at Egypt cemetery.
