George Howard Haar, 81, formerly of Fifth Street, Proctor, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, in Carlton Nursing Home.

He was born Sept. 15, 1919, in Proctor to George and Katherine (McFadden) Haar. He had been a lifelong Proctor resident. George was a graduate of Proctor High School and served in the Naval Reserve from 1937-1941. He served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific from 1941-1945. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Tarawa and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. After the war, he was employed as a clerk for the U.S. Postal System for more than 30 years until retirement.

George was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Proctor, Proctor Moose Lodge 1302, American Postal Workers Union and a life member of both the Proctor VFW Post 8960 and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing and playing cards, especially cribbage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Diane Habert on Feb. 18, 2000; and sisters Kathryn Gorham, Elaine Haar, Bunny Mapes and Clarice Weiler.

Survivors include his daughter, Mary ''Eileen'' (Theodore ''Ted'') Beaupre of Esko; grandchildren Lori (Chris) Anderson of Cloquet, Lisa Renshaw of Moose Lake, Brian Bailey of Boston and Michael ''Mike'' (Emma) Higby of Moose Lake; and great-grandchildren Trevor Bailey, Jett Anderson and Ian Higby.

Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Rose Catholic Church, 3 Sixth Ave., Proctor, the Rev. Father James Bissonette officiating. Burial in Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Memorials to the American Diabetes Association or Disabled American Veterans would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
