John James Dardis, 84, of Proctor passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in Nopeming Nursing Home.

He was born March 27, 1916, to Jessie (Preston) and Frank Dardis in Duluth. He was a 1933 graduate of Proctor High School and attended Duluth Business University, the University of Minnesota Duluth and University of Minnesota.

John was employed by Phillips Petroleum Co. from 1935 to 1937, and then became first secretary for Proctor Water and Light Commission until 1942.

He was a first lieutenant in the Army serving during World War II in Bremen, Germany with the 115th Regimental Combat Team, 29th Infantry Division.

He returned to Proctor and managed the Water and Light Commission until 1948 when he became owner of Whitney Lumber and Fuel in Proctor. He served several years as member of the Proctor Police and Civil Service Commission.

In 1950, he married Loretta Brassard, and she died in 1975 after 25 years of marriage. He was appointed first Proctor city clerk-treasurer in 1965 and retired in 1980.

He was the first World War II commander and life member of the Proctor American Legion Post 106 and a former member of the VFW. He was a longtime member of Forbes United Methodist Church and AARP.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Murray ''Red'' Whitney.

John is survived by his wife, Addie, whom he married Nov. 25, 1977; sons John Dale (Robyn) and Bruce (Charlene), both of Duluth; grandchildren Joseph, Jayson and Derek Dardis, and Amie (Ryan) Armbruster; stepsons Gordon (Mary) Thoreson of Superior, Rick (Wendy) Thoreson of Lake Nebagamon and Kyle (Ann) Thoreson of Eveleth; a stepdaughter, Darla (Gary) Carlson of Burnsville, Minn.; 10 step-grandchildren; and eight step-great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service Saturday in Forbes United Methodist Church. Burial in Oneota Cemetery. Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
