Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Sergeant Major in the Union Army. He was awarded the Medal of Honor as a First Sergeant in Company C, 38th U.S. Colored Troops for action on September 29, 1864 at Chapin's Farm, Virginia. His citation reads "Commanded and gallantly let his company after the commanding officer had been killed; was the first enlisted man to enter the enemy's works." (bio by: Don Morfe)
