Scientist, Astronomer. Born in Uppsala, Sweden, he was an astronomer, physicist and mathematician noted for developing the temperature scale used in almost all scientific work. Celsius' fixed scale for measuring temperature defines zero degrees as the temperature at which water freezes and 100 degrees as the temperature at which water boils. In 1741, he built Sweden's first observatory.
