A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in New Cumberland, Cumberland County, August 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. According to his obituary, he was wounded at the battle of Antietam September 17, 1862. While his military records do not reflect that, they are not reliable for the 130th Pennsylvania. He was honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863.
In 1870, he and his family lived in New Cumberland, Cumberland County, and, in 1890, in Harrisburg. He cut off two fingers of his left hand in a post-war sawmill accident. Died at his daughter Amelia's home.
