PERRY- Carl James Barrett, 91, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at Heart of Georgia Hospice Inpatient Care. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at First Baptist Church of Perry with Reverend Larry Wood officiating. Interment will be in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery in Macon immediately following the service.
Mr. Barrett was born in Bethlehem, Georgia, to the late Lawrence and Molly Gaddis Barrett. Upon graduation from Winder High School in Winder, Georgia, he attended Crandall Business College, and soon married the love of his life, Eudelle Brooks. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, and they moved to New Jersey. He was later assigned to the newly launched USS MIDWAY and was medically retired in 1945. The couple moved to Macon and then to Perry in 1950, where they would make their home and raise their children.
He was hired in Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base as a Production Control Supervisor, and he retired after 33 years in the same position. He was instrumental in organizing the first FFA Band at Perry High School and offered members mandolin and guitar lessons. Through the years, he grew to love his God-given talent of playing the guitar, and shared his musical enthusiasm with everyone. A very active and long-time member of First Baptist Church in Perry, Mr. Barrett sang in the Adult Choir and often sang duets with his daughter, Barbara; was a member of the quartet; was ordained as a Deacon in 1964 and was Chairman of the Deacons for many years; was a member of the Board of Trustees, serving as Chairman twice; was a Sunday School Teacher; was on the Stewardship Committee, Building Committee, and was Church Clerk for a period of time. Mr. Barrett enjoyed his involvement in Community activities. He joined the Lions Club of Perry in 1953, serving as President four times, Zone Chairman once, and receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. He was also a member of the American Legion. Later in life, Mr. Barrett became a realtor with Richardson Realty, and later joined his son, Lynward, at Landmark Realty, where he retired again after 17 years. His greatest treasure in life, though, was making memories with his family. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Eudelle Brooks Barrett; a son, Larry Barrett; a daughter, Beulah Carlene Barrett; four sisters; and one brother.
Left to cherish the memories are his children, Lonice Barrett (Carol) of Dunwoody, Barbara Mobley (Jerry), Beverly Jacobs (Clint), and Lynward Barrett, all of Perry; his grandchildren, Jenny Barrett, Scott Barrett (Amy), Carla W. Holt (Michael), Ashlie Delle David (Clark), Lauri Jacobs, Brooke Jacobs Miller (Travis), Britt Barrett, Richelle B. Lambert (Phil), and Cooper Samuel Barrett; thirteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
