The son of Joseph P. Mellinger and Hannah Grapes. He was also known as Samuel Mellinger. He and his brother Daniel Almond Mellinger who changed his name to Albert Mansfield Patterson were in a fight and thought they had killed a man........but the man was alive. He married Martha"Mattie" Butcher Dec. 10,1889 in Muscatine, Muscatine Co., Iowa.

They had 13 children with two set of twins eleven months apart. Johnny, Lloyd, Jay, Mae, Lula, Lewis, Frank, Clara, James, Earl (twin to Pearl and died at birth) ,Pearl, Raymond, and Clarence.

They lived in Crawfordsville, Iowa and he worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad all his life.
