James William Adams was born on March 22, 1921 in Swifton, Arkansas to Noah Edward and Ida Mallow Adams. He grew up as a cotton farmer plowing the fields for his father. He left Arkansas to join the Army and served in WWII from August 1942 – December 1945. He traveled with the 194th Field Artillery Group through Italy, Germany, and Austria and earned several decorations including: 5 Bronze Service Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He is survived by his "beautiful bride of 62 years", Virgie Adams; 4 children: Judy McVay, Linda Eloi and husband Lloyd, Wayne Adams and wife Leslie; numerous nieces and nephews and THE METRO DINER. He also enjoyed spending time with his 6 grandchildren; April Whalen, Jason Bailey, Ben McGlaun, Darby McVay, Heather Adams and Noah Adams and his great grandson, Andrew Whalen. James began his long food services career with the Toddle House Corporation before founding his own company, Metro Food Shops, Inc.. He opened the first Metro Diner in Preston Center in 1963 and operated as many as 14 restaurants during the next 30 years. He continued to stay involved in an advisory role for Metro Diner working with his son until 2011. Visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday at Sparkman/Hillcrest. Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Northwest Hwy. Chapel Interment to follow Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please support the Veterans of Foreign Wars in his honor.
