Joseph Patch established a store at what later became Patch's Corner at the intersection of the Amherst and Merrimack Roads (South Merrimack and Silver Lake Roads). This store served as the focal point for a growing settlement in Northern Hollis. Other tradesman established their business near the Patch store which sold rum and other goods from Boston. By the turn of the 19th Century there were coopers, blacksmiths, shoemakers and a school in this vicinity.
