Son of Jacob and Charity (Taylor) Garrett, he emigrated to TX in 1828 settling in the Ayish Bayou District. In August of 1832 he fought under Capt. Samuel S. Davis in the Battle of Nacogdoches; was one on a comittee of fifteen to select the town site of San Augustine; enlisted in the company of Capt. William Kimbro in the summer of 1836; and was on the board of trustees for the University of Wastern Texas in 1848.
The father of 13 children by two marriages.
