Ralph was born in Webb City, Mo., on Aug. 8, 1918, to parents, William George and Alta S. Jones Avery. He grew up as part of a very large family. Everyone worked the farm and he helped his dad run a dairy farm and a very large vegetable garden.
Throughout his life, Ralph continued to work hard, doing whatever it took to put food on the table, often holding down two and three jobs at a time. He attended the First Baptist Church in Joplin, Mo., serving as a deacon and teaching Sunday School. He raised his sons with a very strong belief in God and His plan for our salvation.
After leaving a job in Vickers, Mo., 1959 brought the family to California, to begin a new life. Ralph worked as a groundskeeper for Hawthorne School District from 1959 to 1972.
Mr. Avery is survived by three sons, Fred, Roger and Tom Avery; brothers, Walt and Bob Avery; and sisters, Vivian Butts and Freda Deryer. His wife, Kathryn, preceded him in death on July 5, 2005.
A funeral service will held on Monday, Jan. 23, at 1 p.m. at Wood Family Funeral Service in Tehachapi. Mr. Avery will be interred in Desert Lawn Cemetery in Palmdale, Calif., on Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. following a graveside service. Pastor Ron Barker of the Tehachapi First Baptist Church will conduct the services.
