St. A. Native Dies In Mass.
Word has been received in this city of the recent death of George S. Swift, 67 of Northampton, Mass., a former resident of St. Albans and a cousin of Miss Florence Merritt of Lincoln Avenue. When residents of this city the deceased's family occupied the house on Congress Street, the home of the late Mrs. Frank W. Smith for many years and now the property of Mr. And Mrs. Robert Wood.
One of Northampton's leading financial figures as president of Smith Charities, Mr. Swift was born here June 28, 1885, son of William C. and Sarah Swift. He went to Northampton in 1888 and was graduated from Northampton High School in 1904.
He entered Smith Charities that year as assistant clerk. He was made clerk of the organization in May, 1915, and was elevated to the presidency in May of 1931.
Mr. Swift was a member of Northampton Rotary Club, treasurer of the Hampshire Chapter, American Red Cross, a trustee of Childs Park and a member of Edwards Congregational Church.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Florence Jager Swift; four sons, Gordon S. of Northampton, Warren R. of Sugar Hill, N.H., Donald C. of Ridgewood, N.J. and Paul W. of Newton Center, Mass.; also seven grandchildren.
