Joseph McCulloch was the youngest son of James McCulloch and Margaret Patterson. His father died when he was three years old. He was raised by his mother, Margaret (Patterson) McCulloch and his grandmother Sara Patterson on the 127 acre James McCulloch farm near Shears Crossing in Allegheny Township Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was married to Harriet Hudson 13 May 1851 by Rev. William Galbreath. They had thirteen children. Following the death of seven of their children to scarlet fever and diptheria, he decided that the farm was unhealthy and in early 1875 rented the Delmont Hotel furniture and all, and moved his family there to Delmont, Pennsylvania, which was about twenty miles from the farm. In the spring of 1875 they moved to Parnassus since the lease at the hotel was up. Joseph went into business with his nephew Josiah Rowan. Then the family moved to Leechburg.

In addition to the children linked below, Joseph and Harriet also had:

Sarah Etta McCulloch, born 27 Oct 1878, married George Washington Denney, died 13 June 1968 Minot, ND. Probably buried in Wilmington, Delaware.
