Esther Mary (Essie) was the second child and first daughter born to Conrad Alleman and Rebecca Cassel. Conrad was a prominent resident of the village of Highspire in Lower Swatara Township. In 1856 Essie married Dr. James A. Shriner. They lived in White Deer, Union Co., PA, where Dr. Shriner was raised. Their first child Nina was born in White Deer in 1857. Their second child, Viola, was born in 1859. Dr. Shriner died in Feb 1860, just shy of his 30th birthday. Essie buried him in Middletown, and returned with her two young girls to live with her parents in Highspire. Viola died in 1862.

In 1865 Essie married David Cannon, a canal boat captain. They had three more children, Hiram Alleman, Emma Viola, and Florence Kate.
