DINKINS, CHARLES CROLEY - age 85, of Powell, passed away peacefully from complications associated with Alzheimer's disease on Saturday, January 14, at Homewood Assisted Living Facility. Mr. Dinkins was born in Whitley County, Kentucky, to Phronia and Walter Dinkins on May 30, 1926. He served in the US Army infantry during the post WWII occupation of Germany. He married Vera Rogers at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on May 5, 1951, and was a general supervisor at Y-12 in Oak Ridge until he retired in 1990. With his own hands, he built the house in Powell where he and Vera spent the entirety of their marriage until they moved to Homewood in May of last year. He was the first president of the Powell Recreation Commission, overseeing Little League baseball and youth football in the early 1960's. In the mid 1960's, Charles and Vera were the youth leaders at Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church where they have been faithful members and where they have served as both elder and deacon. In the late 1960's, along with close friends Harold Maples and Joel Kinley, and later joined by Barry Burton, Charles started Currint Interprises, Inc., a five-star PADI diving business originally located on Clinton Highway. In 1976, Currint Interprises was relocated to Magnolia Avenue where he and Harold Maples operated it until the business was sold in the early 1990's. At Currint Interprises, Charles was a NAUI, YMCA, and PADI diving instructor, coordinated commercial diving operations, and led recreational diving trips around the world to locations in the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, Red Sea, South Pacific, and throughout the Caribbean. Preceded in death by brothers Lawrence and Donald Dinkins. Survived by wife Vera Dinkins; daughter and husband Patti and John Matthews; son and wife Gerry and Barbara Dinkins; grandchildren, Rachel, Julia, Jamie, T.C., Zack; brother and wife Marion and June Dinkins, (sons Ronald, Donald, Chuck); nieces, Debbie Dinkins Viox, Donna Dinkins Sallee; several other nieces and nephews. Special thanks to caregiver Ron Thorpe who went above and beyond in his service to the family while caring for Charles. The family will receive friends 5:00-8:00 pm, Tuesday, the service will follow at 8:00 pm at Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jean Richardson and Dr. Thomas Sweet officiating. Friends and family will meet at Woodhaven Memorial Gardens at 1:45 pm, Wednesday, for an 2:00 pm Interment. Pallbearers: John Matthews, Ronald Dinkins, Donald Dinkins, Chuck Dinkins, Jeffrey Schad, David Rogers, Ronald Rogers, Harold Maples, In Lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Beaver Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Youth Group.
