Son of Patrick and Nancy Findley Coulter, very early settlers of Scrubgrass, now Clinton Township.
John married 1st to Achsah Riggs, daughter of Reverend Cyrus and Mary Ross Riggs (who are buried in Elkhorn Cemetery, Washington County, Illinois) and they were the parents of six daughters: Josephine (Feather), Caroline Cossitt (Allen), Eliza Martha (Moyn), Achsah (Witherup), Amelia (Eakin), and Ann (Davidson) Coulter.
After Achsah's death, he married Elizabeth Baird. He and Elizabeth were the parents of Cyrus Riggs, Mary Adeline (Eakin) and Martha B. Coulter. John died in 1849 and his second wife was left to raise all the children.
