John S. Smurl, 75, of South Sherman Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Thursday morning in Nesbitt Memorial Hospital, Kingston.
Born in Parsons, he was the son of the late Samuel and Mary McAfee Smurl. Mr. Smurl was a graduate of Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, and prior to his retirement, he had been employed by Rea & Derrick Drug Store, Penn Plaza, Wilkes-Barre. He had been previously employed as a welder by Pressed Steel, Wilkes-Barre, for more than 40 years. Mr. Smurl also a member of Holy Rosary Church, Wilkes-Barre.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mary Mulhern; daughter, Betty Yanovitch, Cinnaminson, N.J.; son, Jack, Wilkes-Barre, 10 grandchildren; sister, Marie Langdon, Birmingham, Ala., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be held Monday at 8:30 from the McLaughlin Funeral Home, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9 Holy Rosary Church, Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call Saturday 7 to 9. and Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
